How can i get my speakers to work properly?

I have a Compaq Presario, and Altec Lansing stereo speakers, but i cant get them to work. I’m pretty sure theres nothing wrong with the speakers, becuase there are speakers built in to my moniter, and even those werent working before i got the stereo ones. There has to be some kind of settings that i’m missing, because i havent been able to get any sound yet. I checked the connections carefully, and im pretty sure everything is hooked up right.
i have done all those control panal device manager things. I wnet thorugh every troubleshooting thing and nothing worked. nothing is muted, and we just had these same speakers and everything worked fine.
i dont think my sound device is in the device manager.. how am i supposed to get it there
there are 7 things there, which ones should i delete

Which makes the better 2.1 computer speaker between Altec Lansing or Harman Kardon?

External speakers stopped working properly on pc sound is distorted they work fine on my laptop. How do I fix?

How do I get my headset and mic to work on my computer (altec lansing)?

I have cable connection and when I click on the # to call on the computer it calls my home phone, and I can hear everything through the phone, but nothing on the headset. I called technical support for the company, but they said it would be 2 days before someone could get back with me. How does it work with a cable connection?
