Protest Against Neo-Nazis in Lansing, Michigan

Monday, June 30th, 2008
symphy asked:

75 Neo-Nazi demonstrators were greeted by 750 protestors on April 22, 2006 at Michigan’s Capitol building.

I only captured a bit of it on video, but thought some of the protestors went a bit overboard (calling the black preacher a “fascist” for saying that God doesn’t want us to counter **** with hate, or claiming the cops maintaining order were merely the “armed wing” of the **** party). Still, I’d rather be an anti-Nazi than a pro-Nazi. :)

2Bad4U asked:

We are so willing to deal with a buyer,we can offer an assumable mortgage,we are not trying to make money on it… if we can break even we would be happy. Should we ask our rock bottom price…to break even? Or keep it higher to let someone offer down? We owe 79,900 (rounded off) and paid (rounded off) 84,900… We have it listed at 88,000….Help?
We did have it listed with a realtor…not one showing! Listed for 8 months and nothing! Our house in a good neighborhood and it is small but cute and clean. Very good condition.

Turn your Garbage Into Valuable Top Soil

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

Austin Lansing asked:

Some areas are becoming stricter about how much garbage they will collect as well as what is in it (if they have a re-cycling program). To further add to the garbage problem, burning your household waste outside can be banned in some areas.

The answer is to compost! This solution will even give you that smug feeling of helping the environment (or it will at least mean that the garbage man won’t leave your trash in the driveway!) According to the US National Soil Survey, “A single spade full of rich garden soil can contain more species of organisms than can be found above ground in the entire Amazon rain forest.”

Two key rules with composting are: 1. do not use too much water - if you have to err, then less is better than more. 2.Think in terms of greens and browns. Greens are grass clippings, vegetable waste and kitchen scraps (nitrogen). Browns are fallen leaves, straw, newspaper and wood chips (carbons).

Browns are usually dryer than greens, and need to be. So collect your leaves on a sunny day and keep them in bags in your back yard to add to your compost as needed. Wet compost will always be available, as you will always have kitchen waste, so your (dry) leaves will be necessary. If you run out of dry leaves, you can shred newspaper, the print is almost always non toxic these days.

A compost pile is supposed to get hot (and even steam!) this will be the nitrogen burning off and indicates that your garbage is turning from decayed matter into compost. This heating up process works better if it is in a bin, and not a sprawling pile. This need not be expensive, just roll up a piece of chicken wire into a tube and line it with two black bin liners, allow air to circulate under the base. Protect it from animals and cover the top against rain.

Here are some healthy additions to nurture your compost pile: Finely ground limestone, a sprinkling of top soil, liquid seaweed emulsion (like SM3 or Maxicrop), a sprinkling of ground rock powders. Finally, many composting experts recommend that about 20% should be animal manure.

You can assemble your compost like this: First make a large spread out pile using 2 x five gallon buckets of dry browns, followed by one five gallon bucket of greens. Repeat this once more, then sprinkle ground limestone thinly over the top. Add any of the listed extras, and sprinkle some soil, then one or two liters of water with a watering can (it must be sprayed not poured). Do this whole procedure a couple more times, then mix it all up and fork it into your composting bin. This process has mixed it and so you can just leave it to ‘do its thing’. Or, you can use Household Compost Activator as your liquid.

These are some of the foolproof ways of composting. In the old days, the pioneers just threw it all in an old (washed) oil drum, sprinkled lime and left it - maybe that will still work too!

Low Maintenance Salt Water Pools

Friday, June 27th, 2008
Lansing
Austin Lansing asked:

Salt water pools have been in use since the 1960s in Australia. Owners of these new, virtually maintenance free, pools say that you will never go back once you have tried them! There is no more itchy skin, stinging eyes or bleached out bathing suits with a salt water pool.

The old fashioned method of reading the Ph balance and shuddering every time the rain turned your pool green is over. Gone are the bottles of chlorine and the necessity of ’shocking’ your pool back to a healthy color. Nowadays there is such an invention as the salt water pool.

The idea was derived in Australia, and unlike the constant monitoring of the chlorine based out-door pool that we are all used to, it will only need ‘doctoring’ about twice per year!

It sounds a little too easy to be true, but when you think that we all swim in the salty ocean, it is amazing that it has not been thought of before! The cleansing agent in the salt water pool is saline (surprise!) but it is not used in the same ratio as it is found in the sea.

There are 50,000 parts per million in ocean water, and the recommended salt concentration in a pool is 2800 to 4000 parts per million. The Dead Sea is 8% salt which is 80,000 parts per million. (Of course the Dead Sea also has large quantities of several other minerals.)

Instead of adding the chlorine ‘puck’ shaped tablets to the erosion feeder system pumping mechanism so that the water is constantly monitored to avoid health hazards, this system has a far simpler way of staying healthy.

Unless you want a lesson in Grade 12 chemistry, it will suffice to say that once a year (say at the start of the season) you need to attend to your pool’s needs. Once a year you will need to add chlorine (a low amount) and salt to the pool.

After that your pool will need a refresher once or twice a year at the most. This is because the salt water pool is designed on a completely different system from the chlorine pool.

The erosion feeder system is not used at all, in fact a built in generator is used which automatically uses a form of electrolysis to separate water molecules. These water molecules (H20) split into separate hydrogen and oxygen which then combine with the salt and the chlorine in the water. Because this sets up a chemical process which is self perpetuating the water is always safe to swim in.

The initial cost of installing a salt water pool will be more expensive than installing a chlorine pool. However, the amount of money saved on all those chlorine pucks and chemicals soon adds up. (Also you can factor in the amount of wear and tear on mum during those ‘down’ days when the pool is not usable.)

Fewer chemicals may be a good thing. It has been noted that the amount of toxins that we absorb through our skin when we are totally immersed in water is far greater than if we actually drank a glass of swimming pool water!

There will have to be one change if you have a salt water pool, the metal ladder in the pool must be properly grounded. If not, it will probably oxidize over time due to the electrolyzing process going on.

If you already have a chlorine pool, then it is easy to change it to a salt water pool. You will need a built-in salt water generator and a new hobby to fill up the extra time that you will have once you are not checking all those little pH tables!

How to make friendships work in this city (Lansing)?

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

OhioFantastic asked:

I’m looking for some objective opinions here:
A friend of mine recently moved away to a new city. We are from Michigan, where virtually all cities are the same. She previously lived in Arlington before, and moved back home because she didn’t have any friends there. When she moved back to Michigan, she found that she didn’t have friends here either, hence the reason for her return to Arlington.
She is an attractive, hysterical, enthusiastic person who always had plenty of friends in college.
I’m in a similar boat, where i have 5 best friends in the states surrounding me, but none here. I always had a lot in college too… but here, its hard to make friends.
Do you think a lack of friends where you’ve always had plenty can be attributed to your location, or to your age (its just a stage we’re going through)? What suggestions can you offer for meeting people? I’ve joined clubs and taking classes at the local college, still nothing. Almost like they have fulfilled their friend quota.
I have a serious boyfriend who lives here, but i do miss having female friends…. how do you make friends with other girls and not come off like a big ******* when you want to get their phoen numbers so you can hang out some time?
I would like to add that i do have a job as an engineer. However, I work with only 5 other people. One of them is 54, two of them are 36 and married to each other, another is 34 and married with 2 kids, and the other is a 40 year old man, married with kids. I’m 24 and not married.
